Writing better prompts: the R-C-T-F framework

A simple four-part structure — Role, Context, Task, Format — that works with every model.

October 2, 20267 minBeginner

The framework

  1. Role — who should the AI act as? “You are an experienced travel planner.”
  2. Context — the facts it needs. “Family of 4, 5 days in Dubai, mid budget.”
  3. Task — the exact job. “Build a day-by-day itinerary.”
  4. Format — how you want it. “A table with morning / afternoon / evening.”

Example

You are an experienced travel planner. We are a family of 4 visiting Dubai for 5 days on a mid budget.
Build a day-by-day itinerary. Return a table with morning, afternoon and evening columns.

Tips

  • Put long material (documents, code) in clearly marked blocks.
  • Ask the model to ask you questions first if the task is complex.
  • Save prompts that work — that’s what our Prompt Library is for.
