What it is
Symphony turns project work into isolated, autonomous implementation runs, so teams can manage work instead of supervising coding agents. In the demo, it monitors a Linear board for work and spawns agents to handle tasks. The agents provide proof of work such as CI status, PR review feedback, complexity analysis, and walkthrough videos, and land the PR safely when accepted. It is described as a low-key engineering preview for testing in trusted environments.
Who it's for
- Teams that have adopted harness engineering and want to manage work at a higher level than individual coding agents
- Developers who want to implement Symphony from a spec in a language of their choice
- Engineers interested in trying an experimental Elixir-based reference implementation
Requirements
Requirements
- Works best in codebases that have adopted harness engineering
- Intended for trusted environments (engineering preview)
- For the reference implementation, the environment setup described in elixir/README.md
Setup
Option 1: Build your own implementation
Tell your favorite coding agent to build Symphony in a programming language of your choice using the spec.
bashImplement Symphony according to the following spec: https://github.com/openai/symphony/blob/main/SPEC.mdOption 2: Use the experimental Elixir reference implementation
Follow elixir/README.md to set up your environment and run the Elixir-based implementation. You can also ask a coding agent to help with setup.
bashSet up Symphony for my repository based on https://github.com/openai/symphony/blob/main/elixir/README.md
Examples
Prompt an agent to implement Symphony from the spec
PromptImplement Symphony according to the following spec:
https://github.com/openai/symphony/blob/main/SPEC.mdExpected output: Option 1 in the README: have a coding agent build Symphony in a programming language of your choice.
Prompt an agent to set up the reference implementation
PromptSet up Symphony for my repository based on
https://github.com/openai/symphony/blob/main/elixir/README.mdExpected output: Option 2 in the README: ask a coding agent to help set up the Elixir-based reference implementation for your repository.
Pros & cons
Pros
- Pro:Language-agnostic: a spec (SPEC.md) lets you build an implementation in a language of your choice
- Pro:Offers an experimental Elixir reference implementation with setup instructions
- Pro:Demo shows agents providing proof of work (CI status, PR review feedback, complexity analysis, walkthrough videos) and landing PRs when accepted
- Pro:Licensed under Apache License 2.0
Cons
- Con:Described as a low-key engineering preview intended only for trusted environments
- Con:Reference implementation is experimental
- Con:Works best only in codebases that have adopted harness engineering
