What it is

The Agent SDK Development Plugin covers the lifecycle of building Claude Agent SDK applications, from initial scaffolding to verification against best practices. It helps you start new projects with the latest SDK versions and checks that your applications follow official documentation patterns. The plugin is included in the Claude Code repository and was written by Ashwin Bhat. This write-up covers version 1.0.0. The main entry point is the interactive /new-sdk-app command. It asks clarifying questions about the language (TypeScript or Python), the project name if you didn't provide one, and the agent type (coding, business or custom). It also asks about the starting point (minimal, basic or a specific example) and your tooling preferences (npm/yarn/pnpm or pip/poetry). It then: - checks for and installs the latest SDK version - creates all necessary project files and configuration - sets up environment files (.env.example, .gitignore) - provides a working example tailored to your use case - runs type checking (TypeScript) or syntax validation (Python) - verifies the setup automatically with the matching verifier agent The plugin includes two verifier agents: agent-sdk-verifier-py for Python projects and agent-sdk-verifier-ts for TypeScript projects. Both check: - SDK installation and version - correct SDK usage and patterns - agent initialization and configuration - environment and security (.env, API keys) - error handling and functionality - documentation completeness The Python verifier also checks environment setup (requirements.txt, pyproject.toml). The TypeScript verifier also checks tsconfig.json and type safety and imports. Each verifier produces a report with: - an overall status (PASS / PASS WITH WARNINGS / FAIL) - critical issues that prevent functionality - warnings about suboptimal patterns - a list of passed checks - specific recommendations with SDK documentation references The verifiers run automatically after /new-sdk-app creates a project. You can also trigger them by asking Claude in natural language.

Who it's for

  • Developers starting a new Claude Agent SDK application in TypeScript or Python
  • Developers modifying an existing Agent SDK application who want to verify it still follows best practices
  • Teams who want to check an Agent SDK application before deploying it to production

Requirements

Requirements

  • Claude Code installed
  • Python or TypeScript environment, depending on the chosen language (with npm/yarn/pnpm or pip/poetry tooling)
  • An ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to run the generated agent

Setup

  1. Ensure Claude Code is installed

This plugin is included in the Claude Code repository, so you need Claude Code installed to use it.

  2. Use the plugin

The plugin commands and agents are automatically available.

Examples

Create a new SDK app

bash
bash
/new-sdk-app my-project-name

What it does: Starts the interactive project creation flow with the project name already provided. You can also run /new-sdk-app without a name and it will ask for one.

Create a customer support agent project

bash
bash
/new-sdk-app customer-support-agent
# → Creates a new Agent SDK project for a customer support agent
# → Sets up TypeScript or Python environment
# → Installs latest SDK version
# → Verifies the setup automatically

What it does: Shows the full sequence the command performs, from scaffolding through automatic verification.

Trigger the Python verifier

Prompt
prompt
"Verify my Python Agent SDK application"
"Check if my SDK app follows best practices"

Expected output: Example requests that trigger the agent-sdk-verifier-py agent to review a Python Agent SDK project and produce a report.

Start developing after scaffolding

bash
bash
# Set your API key
echo "ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your_key_here" > .env

# Run your agent
npm start

What it does: From the workflow example: after creating and verifying a TypeScript project, set your API key in .env and run the agent.
