What it is
Onboarding CRO is a marketing skill focused on what happens after a user signs up. Its core goal is reducing time-to-value by designing the Minimum Path to Value (MPTV) -- the fewest steps needed for a user to experience enough value to make a confident decision. The skill emphasizes doing over showing, with interactive experiences preferred over tutorials. The skill is grounded in five behavioral psychology principles: the endowed progress effect (a checklist starting at 20% done drives roughly 40% more completions), the peak-end rule (users judge experiences by the best moment and the ending), the Goldilocks rule (motivation peaks when tasks are neither too easy nor too hard), the BJ Fogg behavior model (behavior requires motivation, ability, and a prompt), and the Mario Kart boosters-and-blockers metaphor from Ramli John (add accelerants and remove friction). A ten-component toolkit helps assemble onboarding experiences: welcome forms, initial screens, drip emails, skippable tutorials, videos, docs, onboarding calls, data inputs, checklists, and empty states. The skill recommends using the fewest components that reach value. It also covers defining activation metrics, choosing among five activation models, handling stalled users with detection and re-engagement tactics, and coordinating email and in-app messaging to avoid duplication.
