What it is
PESTLE Analysis is a product strategy skill that evaluates six categories of macro-environmental factors affecting a product or market. Political factors cover government policies, regulations, and political stability. Economic factors examine economic growth, GDP trends, and financing access. Social factors address population demographics and cultural values. Technological factors focus on emerging technologies and digital transformation. Legal factors consider data protection, privacy laws, and industry regulations. Environmental factors evaluate climate change impact and sustainability requirements. The methodology involves identifying 3 to 5 factors per category, assessing each for impact level and probability, prioritizing by combined weight, and developing strategic responses. Each factor is classified as either an opportunity or a threat, enabling focused planning. The skill produces documented assumptions for areas needing further research and recommends actions for the highest-priority factors. PESTLE is particularly useful for market entry viability assessment, macro-risk identification, opportunity spotting, scenario planning, and regulatory roadmapping. It complements SWOT analysis by focusing exclusively on external forces rather than internal strengths and weaknesses. The skill is part of the pm-product-strategy plugin alongside other frameworks like Porter's Five Forces and Lean Canvas.
